Welcome to the Inaugural Heart of Ohio/Ashland, Ohio Our Community Salutes Ceremony

2025 High School Enlistee Recognition Ceremony

The Ashland Community is the Hallmark town of Ohio, charming, welcoming and very patriotic!

  • The Honorable Mayor of Ashland, Matt Miller will lead the event as our Master of Ceremony.

  • The National Anthem will be sung by State Representative and former Miss Ohio Melanie Miller.

  • Our Keynote Speaker is Captain Jack Hughes, U.S. Army Congressional Fellow, currently serving in the Pentagon as a Budget Liaison to Congress. CPT Hughes enlisted in the Army following his graduation from high school. After reaching the rank of E6, he transitioned to Officer Candidate School. In January of 2023, CPT Hughes was selected for a Congressional Fellowship. He attended George Mason University to receive his Masters Degree in Legislative Law. He then served 1 year in the Office of Congressman John (Judge) Carter and is currently at the Pentagon.

Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument - Decoration Day

Decoration Day

The pre-cursor of the modern American Memorial Day was Decoration Day which was traditionally held on May 30th every year.

The Cleveland Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument will hold their Memorial Day/Decoration Day on the traditional date this year.

USS Cod Submarine - Rescue Re-Enactment

The USS Cod will celebrate the 80th anniversary of history's only international submarine to submarine rescue on Saturday, July 12 at 2 pm. On that day in 1945 USS Cod rescued the 55-man crew of the Dutch submarine O19 after it grounded on Ladd Reef, deep in enemy waters. After two days of failed attempts to pull the Allied sub free the crew was taken aboard Cod and the O19 destroyed. Cod's rescue earned her an honorary place in the Netherlands submarine force. 

On July 12 Cod will stage a reenactment of the boat crew transfer and salute the friendship between the two nations with a deck gun demonstration and refreshments.

Ohio honors the sacrifice of our veterans 80 years ago who stormed the beaches in Normandy. For three days Conneaut, Ohio transforms into France. The event has battle reenactments, aerial displays, classes, and also Paratroopers jumping from period aircraft. This is a ticketed event, so make sure you get your pass to be part of this!

C47 Airborne Operation in conjunction with D-Day - Conneaut, Ohio

The same weekend as D-Day, Conneaut, just 20 minutes South, W&R Vets are hosting a C47 Parachute Jump at the NE Ohio Regional Airport in Jefferson, Ohio.

The drop is free and open to public spectators. If you want to jump, you need to complete pre-jump training with one of the Round Canopy Jump Teams (note, there is a train-up in March).

Volunteers will read the names of the 424 Vietnam Veterans of Cuyahoga County who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Family members and community members are welcome to attend and participate in the reading of names and the placing of roses.

After the ceremony there will be a light social affair.-

Military Family Fun Day hosted by the Cleveland Browns

This weekend, The Cleveland Browns and CrossCountry Mortgage are hosting a Military Fun Day at the Cleveland Browns CrossCountry Mortgage training facility in honor of the Month of the Military Child (April). Bring your children for a morning filled with entertainment, camaraderie, and appreciation for our military community, in honor of the Month of the Military Child in April. It's a great opportunity for active duty, reservists, and veterans to enjoy fun activities with their children and connect with fellow supporters. Learn more and register here.
